I have been fortunate enough to have had the great opportunity of visiting Lake Powell for over 25 years. In that time, I have taken every chance that I have been presented with to make the drive and jump into a houseboat and beat it to a secluded canyon.

Summer if fabulous and is what it is all about, but the fall season is perhaps one of the best. The world seems to have slowed from it s hectic pace, the party element has long since headed back to the masses and the season is ready to settle into calm and beauty.

You cannot believe the way that the sun warms and reflects the deserted coves that

are immediately adjacent every channel excursion. The sun can still top out the temperature to over 90 in the day, but the coolness of the season tempers even the longest high pressure.

With all of the crowds (like it ever is really crowded except at entry points) headed back to the grindstone, exploring the Indian ruins is just one example of a day trip that serves to entice everyone to this great adventurous place.

After you have made the trip to Lake Powell once, you understand all of the logistics and most importantly, you understand just what all the fuss about this beautiful lake is.

Fall waterskiing is still possible and quite pleasant. Fishing takes on

a new season of it s own. I don t claim to be much of a fisherman but I have made the trip in the late fall before with my brother (who happens to be a fishing guide and spends 20 weeks a year doing it) and he claims that it rivals his float trips or the outings to Tierra Del Fuego.

Last year in the fall, we had a leftover week in the houseboat and we went just for the hiking. Our two eldest kids had completed their education and graduated in the spring and we convinced them to take the autumn drive and loaded up the suv.
